This French countryside domicile rambles along the crest of a hill overlooking a spectacular view of ponds, horse pastures and mountains. The house includes every luxury and amenity possible. The grand entry salon features laser cut polished marble slab flooring and extensive plaster mouldings. This leads into the grand ballroom where a variety of formal functions and fundraising events are held every year. Adjacent to the ballroom is a two-story English conservatory. Serving the ballroom is a full service bar. Adjacent is a formal dining room leading back to the family area of the house consisting of a large functional kitchen, large gourmet kitchen, large English kitchen, the family dining area and family great room/relaxation space. Rounding out the opposite end of the house is the private owners’ master suite, sitting room, dressing rooms and closets. Adjacent to this and leading from the hallway from the ballroom is a two-story library completely finished in antique wormy chestnut. Overlooking the ballroom is a gallery space to exhibit our clients’ extensive collection of artwork. From this level also is a secret passageway leading through to the second level of the library. Above the five car garage is a guest apartment containing two bedrooms, kitchen and living room.
The exterior bridge crossing the porte-cochere leads to a completely independent guest cottage with living space, full kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Each bedroom area in the estate has balcony and outdoor space associated with it. The lower level of the main house contains a large gallery designed around a specific piece of art, which leads into a game room, billiard parlor, professional grade twenty seat home theater. Adjacent to this is a pool cabana opening out onto a pool we designed in conjunction with world class pool designer, David Tisherman, complete with waterfall, island, grotto and cabana space. The opposite end of the gallery contains cigar smoking room; through custom made iron gates is 15,000 bottle wine cellar with internal fountain. Also on this level is a room dedicated to gift wrap and gift storage. The builder, C.E. Wheeler, worked hand in hand with the interior design firm of Exquisite Design, and the architects to assist the owners in seeking out the finest craftsmen in their trades to develop their best workmanship and attention to detail for this once in a lifetime project.
English Country Manor in an NYC Suburb
Two years of construction ended this spring in completion of a 10,000 square foot home in the exclusive New York City suburb of Essex Fells, NJ. The home contains three living levels. The main living level contains a formal dining room with elaborate plaster mouldings and a barrel vaulted ceiling, as well as a library containing two levels of bookshelves, library ladder and stained glass window wall. The main living space consists of a great room, dining area and kitchen. The first floor is rounded out by a sunroom, laundry facilities and back entry and garage area. The second level contains the bedrooms consisting of a master suite, children's bedrooms and guest quarters. Interesting access is gained to the library by way of a concealed passageway leading from the second floor to the loft level of the library. The lower level, which is open to the rear yard, consists of an authentic Irish bar with game area, seating and TV area. This leads out to a veranda where there is a grotto that includes a spa and fireplace that overlooks the outdoor swimming pool. Serving the outdoor mosaic glass tile-lined swimming pool is an outdoor kitchen area leading into a spa/shower, steam shower, changing rooms, and exercise facilities. At the bottom of the grand stairway is the entry to the home theatre and wine cellar.
The design of the home was meant to invoke the style of a centuries-old English country manor. The use of 8-inch thick stone veneers, limestone quarried in the Midwestern US, slate from New England, and a multitude of decorative features contribute to the effect. There are eight working fireplaces in the house, each with its own decorative chimney termination. The crowning touch of the interior is a tiffany-glass oval dome comprised of over 7,000 individual pieces of glass.
Main Line Manor
This is a new 12,000 s.f. home in Villanova, PA. The house was designed in the fashion of the grand Main Line manor homes of the early twentieth century but with a contemporary twist. The exterior is local stone and cedar siding, with the variety of dormers and other architectural elements to add interest. The interior has been decorated in a modern Southwest style using all very rich, natural materials. The home is completely state-of-the-art with full home automation, security, video monitoring and audio throughout the house.
It contains five bedrooms, a guest suite, two offices, a theater, exercise facilities, swimming pool with indoor steam shower for seven, changing areas, extensive outdoor terraces and landscaping.
